Happy summer! We hope everyone’s staying cool and enjoying the gifts of the season. Here are some cool updates from Riverside this past month:

Cooperative entrepreneurship program - launching July

We are proud to announce that Riverside’s after-school cooperative entrepreneurship program has finally scheduled to launch this summer! Starting July, a cohort of JPS students from middle and high school will participate in a 6-month program to learn the basics of cooperative entrepreneurship. Our curriculum includes a deep dive into cooperation versus competition and how profit impacts society, and a bonus media training with Mississippi Today’s former editor-in-chief Ryan “R.L.” Nave. Following the legacy of the Free Southern Theater, we'll also ground each session with a story circle so we can all experience the power of being held and holding others while we tell our own stories. Big thanks to Noel Didla for getting us connected and passing these lessons down.

It’s been a long road in conversation with students, parents, and each other to map out a curriculum that centers Riverside’s values and meets local needs. We are so excited to get started!

Building development

New member Lori hit the ground running this month, and our building is transforming fast! She’s got our electrical and plumbing systems on track to be ready this month, which is huge. We also have new glass for our windows and decorative bars to balance aesthetics with safety. She’s now got her sights set on landscaping, and plans to replace our grass and hedges with native wildflowers and edible gems.

New member

We’re growing–again! Vanessa Norwood has supported Riverside’s after-school work from the beginning as a dedicated parent to our student cohort. Now, she’s joining the co-stewardship crew with a focus on after-school planning and management:

Hi! My name is Mrs. Vanessa Norwood and I live in West Jackson with my amazing husband, Michael and our three wonderful children…Brianna, Makayla, and Mason. I enjoy playing the piano and painting. This will be my 18th year teaching preschool and my 1st year at St. James’ Preschool. I've served at St. James' School for 5 years as their Director Designee and a Lead Teacher as well.

I am from McComb, MS where I graduated from S.M.C.C. and, from there, I attended William Carey University. I can’t wait to get to know your child and help nurture their love of learning through many hands-on and social adventures.

Welcome, Ms. Vanessa, we are so happy to have you <3

That’s all from us for now. Stay hydrated, friends, and see you next month!
